都是平常影象
偶然涌到梦中来
变幻出多少新奇花样

都是平常情感
都是平常言语
偶然碰着个诗人
变幻出多少新奇诗句

醉过才知酒浓
爱过才知情重
你不能做我的诗
正如我不能做你的梦

It's all ordinary experience,
All ordinary images.
By chance they emerge in a dream,
Turning out infinite new patterns.

It's all ordinary feelings,
All ordinary words.
By chance they encounter a poet,
Turning out infinite new verses.

Once intoxicated, one learns the strength of wine,
Once smitten, one learns the power of love:
You cannot write my poems
Just as I cannot dream your dreams.

诗人介绍

Hu Shih (1891-1962), it was he who opened the floodgates through which would pour the cascade of poetry in the vernacular that represents the mainstream of Chinese verse expression today.

旧梦 Old Dream

山下绿丛中
露出飞檐一角
惊起当年旧梦
泪向心头落

对他高唱旧时歌
声苦无人懂
我不是高歌
只是重温旧梦

From the gree foliage below the hill
Emerges a corner of flying roof.
It awakens an old dream, and causes
Tears to fall within me.

For it I sing a song of old,
In a tune no one understands,
Ah, I am not really singing,
Only reviewing an old dream.

Common are the events;
Ordinary images they are.
Once into dreams they descend,
Weird imageries hover near and far.

都是平常情感
都是平常言语
偶然碰着个诗人
变幻出多少新奇诗句
Common are the feelings;
Like plain words those sound.
Once subject to the poet's fiddling,
In fresh patterns they abound.


醉过才知酒浓
爱过才知情重
你不能做我的诗
正如我不能做你的梦
The drinker feels the lift when he is sodden;
The lover has to feel the feeling by loving.
Thus you cannot write what I have written;
And I cannot dream what you are dreaming.
